About Us

Modderfontein Golf Course has a consistent rating of top 60 in South African golf courses. Measuring the length of 6651 meters, the par of the course is 72. The layout is on a parkland setting and has firm greens with tree-lined fairways. These elements combined with challenging strategic bunkering provides for an excellent test of golf, even for the most accomplished golfer.

Modderfontein Golf Course hosts numerous important amateur tournaments, which sees over 40,000 rounds annually. We are hidden away in the centre of Gauteng, picturesque, harmonious and the ultimate golf hideaway. The outpost of Modderfontein which dates back to 1894 – was the forefather of Modern-day Johannesburg.

The old gold mining town grew up on dynamite, which was used to blast the Witwatersrand Hills, where around 40% of the World’s Gold was mined. We can therefore thank the Modderfontein Dynamite Factory, the world’s largest Dynamite Company – for inaugurating Modderfontein Golf Club back in 1935. Arthur Tomsett was commissioned to design the course and the course was opened by Bobby Locke.

In 1990, the course was redesigned by Hugh Baiocchi with 7 dams and 12 meandering streams to ensure enough water supplies year-round. Modderfontein Golf Course is a challenging course to complete, with 12 of the holes having multiple sources of water coming into play – whether directly in front of the Greens or parallels to the fairways. Each of the 18 holes has its own unique feature and challenge.
